WETT Inspectors are Certified by the Wood Engergy Thermal Transfer, which is a non-profit organization that is used by most insurance companies. WETT requirements are taken from CSA, Building Code and Fire Code regulations.
When a solid-fuel-burning appliance is located within a building, provision shall be made to vent the products of combustion safely to the outside of the building.
Every wood stove installation requires a sound masonry chimney (more on these later) or a UL approved Stainless Steel Class “A” Insulated Chimney. The WETT inspector will identify and ensure the proper chimney or flue pipe is being used.
The flue of a chimney may be different cross-sectional area than that of the appliance flue collar provided that sufficient draft is available at the appliance. A solid fuel appliance shall not be connected to a chimney that serves a natural gas or propane fired device.
When a mechanical flue-gas exhauster is used, the chimney shall be capable of venting the flue gas produced when all the appliances not interlocked to prevent simultaneous firing are firing a their maximum rate at the same time and when the flue gas exhauster is operating.
If using a Thimble it shall be securely fastened to the chimney by means of refractory mortar to prevent displacement. A flue pipe may be reduced in cross-sectional area from that of the appliance flue collar, provided that sufficient draft is available for the appliance.
The flue pipe shall be sloped upward towards the chimney at least 20 mm per meter of horizontal run. The flue pipe shall enter the chimney using a breech pipe or a thimble and be mechanically fastened to the chimney. The flue pipe shall have a sealed connection with the chimney flue and have provisions for visual inspection and cleaning either by clean outs in the flue pipe or by removal of the flue pipe.
A WETT inspection is only recognized by your insurance company. If you are constructing a masonry fireplace or chimney you will need a building permit and have to have the construction inspected prior to enclosing with brick.
